Next Steps
Where to now....
Great ~ you've now got a Scheme!
Here I am. I now have a 'Web Presence', and now I want to develop it further.
Already you are knowingly or unknowingly providing several bits of information to potential customers, GLOBALLY! Although I don't think someone in Taiwan is going to beat a path to your door, some one living locally will.
You've been advertising via the usual media and you've added your web site and email address on all your stationery, business cards, and any advertising literature ~ haven't you?
Then you are now ready to make the Internet work even more for you by 'tuning' your potential customers to come to your site. To do this you ideally need to sit down with a bottle of your favourite tipple and think 'out of the box'.
Define what your business is by keywords. Let's say you run a 'corner shop' so the keywords could be;
Newspapers, Cigarettes, Tobacco, Magazines, Sweets, Milk, .....
These are called Meta words used in Meta tags. Meta Tags are used by the search engines to catalogue your pages, in much the same way as you would file your documents in a filing cabinet.
These words define what your site is and what it offers. You also need to define some indication of locality; Heathfield, Mayfield, Uckfield, ...
Put all these together and then see if you can throw in a few specific ones like Cuban Cigars, Parsons Farm Cheese, Ma Bakers Fudge, this will give your site some individuality from other sites.
Next you need to describe what you site does or has on offer; in one short sentence. For our site 'The corner shop' we might put;
Corner Stores your local Mayfield store always delivers; our paper boys get you the news before breakfast.
Send me this information for your site and I will add it into the head of your web pages, now the search engines will start to catalogue responses and serve up you site when any one asks for something specific; like 'Parsons Farm Cheese Mayfield' in their search.
Unfortunately the search engines can process the information but it takes a few weeks even months to start seeing results, so what else can we do?
Google AdWords
You've probably noticed some pages in search engines are marked as 'sponsored links' MSN, Google, Yahoo search engines offer a facility where you can pay small amounts of money as 'pay per click' to improve the position of your business in the search results.
O.K. enough for now your head probably hurts, stop drinking your favourite tipple, sober up and go look at Google AdWords for more information.
