Web Shop
Running a Store....
A few Items or Services to Sell
Web Shops can be simple or complex, dependent on the type of products or service you offer for sale. If this ranges around 10 to 20 products then a simple catalogue rather than a database approach is suitable.
A straightforward approach is to use payment buttons and provide a page for each product on your web site. Payment is effected by Credit card through Google Checkout or PayPal.
A Complete Store
A full store consisting of hundreds of items is best run via a database. The payment system is best done via a payment gateway like PROTX. There are several choices but they do range in price quite considerably. At time of writing one of the simplest and cheapest is PROTX.
A fair amount of set up in the first instance is required. You will need to provide all products with a description and a code to distinguish each and every item. If you are using sizes or colours like Small, Medium Large, or Red, Yellow, Green for any products then the code would ideally reflect this with a suffix on the end like; 'Stapler-Red', 'Stapler-Green', or 'Vest-S', 'Vest-M' etc. If you have several ranges of product then perhaps identify them by a department code or number as well
The approach of using a unique code that is meaningful makes it easier for staff to read. Never use a code with 'spaces' in it - a database will interpret two spaces different to one space, but at first glance it would read the same to our eyes. Instead use a hyphen or underscore to separate words and don't make the code too long. Maximum of 12 - 13 characters should suffice.
We have set up several Web Shops and each one has an individuality to suit the business.
